Debi had been bugging me about traveling abroad for quite awhile.  I finally got my passport and she came up with the idea of a trip to Mexico.  She found a deal with a timeshare company and we were off on an adventure to Cancun.

We arrive at the airport and were met with a cacophony of sound from all the sales agents hawking  "great deals."  We managed to get past them and met our ride to the hotel.  We were impressed by the high rise hotels along the peninsula and all the activity. Our room had a nice view and it was a short stroll down to the beach.  It took us awhile to get used to the humidity.

We talked to an activity coordinator and booked a trip to the Mayan Palace.   We thought it was a significant historical site, but it turned out to be a timeshare hotel.  We had to sit through a sales presentation at our breakfast and quickly tired  of his aggressive sales tactics.  We had a heated discussion and finally were able to leave to catch the bus back to Cancun. We enjoyed the scenery but were surprised at the poverty in the old part of Cancun.  We returned to the hotel district and enjoyed the warm tropical breeze as we explored the area.  We  found it was a challenge to navigate  some of the steep ramps to the sidewalks.

The next day we booked a tour to a real Mayan ruins 2 hours away in Chitzenitza.  The bus ride introduced  us to the primitive living conditions of people that lived in the jungle.  The  image of a lone man pulling a wagon full of wood miles from anywhere lingered in our mind as we drove deeper into the jungle.  We stopped in a small village a bought a souvenir of a bottle of tabasco sauce embossed with our picture We really enjoyed exploring the grounds at Chitzenitza and were very impressed by the pyramids, that somehow were built without modern construction techniques.  We found the grounds to be fairly accessible.

We booked a tour to Isle de Mueres and were excited to board the  boat for the cruise across the channel.  We sipped Margaritas and enjoyed the Mexican party music as we rolled in the heavy swells.  I snorkeled for a bit as Debi ate lunch.  We explored the shops in town and were surprised when a tropical thunderstorm moved in and filled the streets with ankle deep water.  We were quite soggy on the ride back, but Margaritas helped ease our pain. We took in some more sun and headed back to the airport, already planning our next adventure .
