Deception Pass State Park on Whidbey Island is a destination that provides interesting trails and dramatic viewpoints. The Cranberry Lake Dunes Trail is a paved path that winds through woods and captivating sand dunes in the narrow zone between the lake and Straits of Juan de Fuca. The journey provides opportunities for bird watching, beachcombing and viewing boat traffic. Air traffic from nearby Whidbey Island Naval Air base is also of interest.

The path heads south from the Cranberry Lake parking lot and goes along the lakeshore before entering a wooded area.  A viewing area for bird watching is located off a short side trail that heads east. The main path then veers to the right and heads toward the beach. It winds through the sand dunes and their distincive vegetation. The section along the beach provides opportunities for beachcombing and is an excellent place for wave watching during ferocious winter storms or viewing spectacular sunsets in summer.

It takes approximately 45 minutes to complete the loop trip. The path is mostly level with a few minor inclines. There is a nice picnic area at the lake and an accessible  restroom in the Cranberry Lake parking area. Other more difficult trails are located throughout the park. A Discover Pass is required  for admittance to the park.
