The city with an unusual name was our next destination. Split, Croatia is set in a beautiful location on the Adriatic Sea. We started the morning with a tour into the countryside, where we followed the scenic Certina River into a valley that contained steep cliffs that resembled those in Yosemite. We arrived at the 17th century Radman Mill, which had been converted to a restaurant. We had a wonderful breakfast in the peaceful setting next to the slow moving river. We had a nice chat with a couple from Alabama, who joined us at our table. We explored the mill and the beautiful grounds before heading back to Split.
The main attraction in Split is the massive Diocletian's Palace, which dates back to the 4th century. The palace was built to be the Roman emperor's summer home. We entered the stone archway and began to explore the ancient structure. We found the mausoleum, statues and other hidden rooms that were in various states of restoration. We were amazed at the complexity of the construction, that took place well before the time of modern techniques.
We strolled along the promenade at the waterfront and explored some outdoor markets before returning to the ship.
