We were going to take the Panorama Express train to Lucerne. The elevator at the station wasn't working so we had to take the Debi in her wheelchair up an escalator to the platform. It was a little scary, but we made it and caught the train. The train car was very elegant, with mahogany panels and overstuffed chairs. We enjoyed the views as we traveled through the beautiful mountains. We stopped in Interlocken for lunch and then visited a woodcarving school in Brienz. We were very impressed by the work of the skilled craftsmen and even got to make a carving ourselves. Nigel, our guide took us to the famous Lion's Monument and told us the amazing story of the Swiss guards, whose bravery inspired the creation. We enjoyed a boisterous dinner in a beer hall that night.
Our last day started with a relaxing boat cruise on Lake Lucerne. We arrived at the base of Mt. Sanserhorn and boarded a cog train that took us halfway up the mountain. A cable car took us the remaining distance to the top. We were pleased to find an accessible gravel path that led us along the top of the ridge. We enjoyed listening to the pleasant sound of the music from the cowbells on the cows in the valley below. We had a snack lunch in the warm sun and said goodbye to the high country. A delicious 4 course meal awaited us back in Lucerne.
We were pleasantly surprised with the accessibility in Switzerland and we were thankful for all the people who helped us realize our dream. We faced some challenges and obstacles on our trip, but just looked on them as part of our adventure. Our tour guide told us that we had unusually good luck with the weather and that definitely made things easier. The anticipation of the trip, the adventure itself and our memories really enriched our lives and it didn't take us long to start planning another adventure.
