The walled village of Kotor, Montenegro was our next destination. Our ship entered the narrow fjord like channel early in the morning for the 17 mile journey to Kotor. It seemed like we had entered into a time machine that was taking us back to medieval times. The fog started to lift and the sun shone brightly on the steep, barren mountains that surrounded us as we cruised slowly in the glass smooth waters.
We came around a corner and got our first view of the formidable stone walls and moat that protected the village from invaders. Our ship docked at a pier across road and we strolled across the bridge into the village, which dates back to the 12th century. We entered a busy square, where we were surrounded by shops and cafes that were tucked into the stone walls. We strolled by several beautiful churches and explored the alleys that got progressively narrower. The cobblestone walkways were bumpy at times, but we found most of the village to be accessible. We stopped at an outdoors cafe and enjoyed a delicious lunch in the sun. We explored some shops and were surprised at the amount of high end products that were available. We also visited some of the street vendors outside the village and bought a nice red coral bracelet. We were impressed by a stone wall that rose to the top of the steep hillside behind the village.
We took in the dramatic scenery on our return down the channel, as a stunning sunset developed. We soon found ourselves back in the 21st century.
